Alternatives to Halloween Candy

Halloween is undoubtedly one of the most fun holidays of the year. Kids are excited about selecting their costumes and collecting their favorite goodies, and adults get to see lots of smiling faces as they’re passing out candy to trick-or-treaters. However, for some families, Halloween presents more concerns than just dealing with a sugar high. Whether children have food allergies or intolerances, or parents are just trying to get their kids to make healthier food choices, a holiday focused solely on candy can present logistical problems.

One of the best ways to help ensure that Halloween can be enjoyed by everyone is to provide your trick-or-treaters with non-food items or food items that are on the healthier end of the scale. Just beware: some parents may be hesitant to allow their children to eat any foods that aren’t packaged, so homemade items or apples or popcorn high a high likelihood of ending up in the “do not eat” pile.

Now that you’ve decided to provide your neighborhood kids with non-candy options, here are some options to consider.

Some healthy food options include:

  • Apples (they now sell snack packs of apples with caramel sauce, which are delicious!)
  • Popcorn (un-popped and in the original packaging might make parents more comfortable)
  • Snack packs of chips, crackers, and pretzels
  • Granola bars
  • Raisins
  • 100% fruit snacks
  • Sugar-free pudding cups (the one that don’t need to be refrigerated)
  • Apple sauce or fruit cups
  • Snack packs of nuts or trail mix

In addition to providing healthier snack items for trick-or-treaters, there is now a movement called the Teal Pumpkin Project which aims to provide safe items for children who deal with dietary restrictions such as allergies or intolerances. By placing a pumpkin that’s painted teal on your doorstep kids and parents will know that you’re offering a non-food item so that everyone can enjoy a safe Halloween!
